MENA Tour aiming for October restart in Jordan

The MENA Tour is aiming to restart its 2020 season in Jordan with a “five or six” event series at Ayla, Aqaba in late October.

The Tour was one of the first professional sports organisations to shutdown its operations on March 5th amid growing concerns of the spread of the coronavirus.

David Spencer, Strategic Advisor, MENA Tour, confirmed that work has been ongoing behind the scenes and they hope to make an official announcement towards the end of August.

“We will not press the ‘go’ button on the ‘Jordan Series’ until we are confident that the majority of our players can access Jordan easily and safely from their home destination, and we will make the final decision prior to the end of August,” he said.

“Our plan is to play five or six tournaments in a six-week period with all players being accommodated, fed and cared for in a 5-star “bubble” at the Hyatt Regency at Ayla.

“The facilities at Ayla are nothing short of extraordinary with amenities that will make this stint a real joy for our players.

“We were one of the first professional sports organizations and the first OWGR Tour to suspend play because of our fears about COVID-19.

“The pandemic has been devastating for everyone in the world of golf and for the MENA Tour it has been a difficult time as we were right in the middle of a very exciting season.

“That being said, the problems that golf – and the MENA Tour – face are insignificant when you look at the crushing socio-economic effect that COVID-19 has had on the world.”

Promising Scottish Youngster Ryan Lumsden won the last MENA Tour event, held in March at Ayla.
