Music on the range set to become commonplace on the European Tour

The players at this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship have experienced an enjoyable change to the set up on the driving range with music being played as they practice ahead of the tournament and European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley has revealed that it could become commonplace after getting such a positive response.

“I just ran into a couple of players that said that they absolutely loved having the music on the range,” said Pelley, who was in Abu Dhabi to announce a series of changes to the European Tour including a reduction in the number of events players need to play outside of the Majors and World Golf Championships to four in order to be eligible for membership.

“I said that we are going to definitely have music on the range at the BMW PGA Championship this year, and then it will become commonplace. So in a couple years, I do believe that music on the range will be something that will be synonymous with golf, and the range I think provides a wonderful opportunity for our fans to get closer to our players.”

American Dustin Johnson is one of the stars in the field at Abu Dhabi Golf Club and the World No.3, who is making his debut in the event, revealed that he’s very much in favour of the move.

“I like it,” he said. “If I’m at home playing golf, I always have music playing. It’s something that I think a lot of the guys do. It’s kind of nice and keeps you kind of relaxed on the driving range. Have a little music going, kind of keeps the mood light.

Hopefully it will attract some other people to come out and watch and enjoy the game of golf.”

Johnson, known as DJ, got a taste of what it would be like to be real disk jockey yesterday when English radio presenter Reggie Yates gave him a lesson on the decks at the range alongside Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler.
