Xander Schauffele has revealed some news that will make all the European Tour fans happy as he announced his European Tour status for next season after shooting 71 for the second consecutive day of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
The 25 year old said to an applauding crowd during a Question and Answer session: “I’ve signed up for a European Tour membership so I think you’ll be seeing a little bit more of me next season.”
This season the American competed on the PGA Tour but played in all four Majors and four World Golf Championships to head into the DP World Tour Championship in fifth position in the Race to Dubai. His play-off victory against Tony Finau last month at the WGC – HSBC Champions was his first victory on the European Tour.
Schauffele, who’s ranked 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking, was left out of the Ryder Cup team this summer which was a shock for many golf fans as the likes of Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau was opted for the wildcard picks instead. However, he saw the funny side of it.
“From what I saw on the TV I was pretty happy to not be overseas with that result! No, it was obviously disappointing not to make the Ryder Cup squad but there’s nothing I can do about it.”
Schauffele also spoke about the effect it’s had on the sport with the return of Tiger Woods to the winner’s circle after growing up idolising one of the greatest of all time.
“Without Tiger, we wouldn’t have the purses and the crowds. I got the chills when he won the Tour Championship because it was such an awesome sporting moment with the crowd following him which was really cool.”
Congratulations to our boss on winning the Tour Championship today, marking it his 80th PGA Tour victory and a comeback for the ages. – TGR #TW80 pic.twitter.com/A0ZR8WceRc
